Empowering Women in Optimization: Highly Successful Conference at FAU
The conference "Women in Optimization 2024" at Friedrich-Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) was held from April 10 - 12th, 2024, as the fifth meeting in this series. About 70 female researchers from both industry and academia, doctoral candidates, and students in mathematical optimization attended the successful event. The conference's goal was both on professional development and networking within the optimization community. In expert presentations by distinguished invited speakers, the conference covered a wide range of topics in mathematical optimization. In addition to the presentations, the workshop provided ample space for scientific discussions and exchange of experiences. In an informal atmosphere, the attendants not only illuminated mathematical research topics, but also discussed questions about career planning and work-life balance. Students and junior researchers actively participated in poster sessions where they showed and discussed their research topics. The conference was sponsored by several institutions and research initiatives, namely the CRC/TRR 154, CRC 1411, Department of Data Science (FAU), GRK 2423 Frascal, GRK IntComSin, SPP 1962, and MATH+.

The research training group IntComSin came together in Ellwangen for this years annual meeting in October. Interesting talks about individual research results as well as further discussions on how to proceed with open questions were a strong core of a successful convention. The question and answer-session, where the candidates anonymously questioned the supervisors on every topic of academic life and life with academia, was received favorably by either sides. A four hour lasting hiking trip with great view of the local landscape rounded the conference from a collaborative point of view.
